Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show approaches, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
