Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
