The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
